The first Baked Flies product

Hi, I’m Carma, founder of Baked Flies. Welcome to this new article, where I’ll take you behind the scenes of the first product launched on the site: the Line Rider.

The starting problem

If you’ve ever tried to unload or load a fly line from your reel at home, you know what it means to unroll meters of line across the floor, picking up dust, knots and tangles.
It’s slow, messy, and it ends up ruining your gear.

That’s where the Line Rider comes from: a reel spooler that lets you load and unload your line without turning your house into an obstacle course.

Design evolution

The first version was simple and worked, but it was light and tended to slide on the table.
To fix that, I added a non-slip base filled with concrete: two separate pieces, but stable.

Today, the Line Rider is a single piece: same mechanism, softer shapes, integrated anti-slip base.
It’s the result of testing, feedback and continuous improvements.

Its operation is very simple. On one side, you secure the reel with a sliding ring, just like on a rod handle.
On the other side, you insert the line spool onto a steel pin connected to the handle.

On that same handle, there’s a simple drag system that, by tightening or loosening it, controls the rotation resistance of the spool.

Baked Flies Spare Spools

One of the current trends among fly line manufacturers is to wind lines onto cardboard spools. Less plastic, more “green” packaging, perfect storytelling.

Then reality kicks in.

You throw the spool away, and you’ve lost your storage system. That’s it.
If you want to remove the line from your reel, change it, test another one, or just do some maintenance… you’ve got nowhere to put it.
And you end up treating a €100 fly line like it’s disposable.

That’s where the disconnect becomes obvious:
you pay premium prices for high-end lines, but you’re left without a basic tool to manage them over time.

Baked Flies spools were born exactly from this practical need.

One of the key features is the integrated pin: it lets you hook the loop of the fly line instantly and start winding right away.
No wasted time, no improvised knots, no trying to keep everything under tension with three hands.

If you want to see the Line Rider and the spare spools in action, I’ve uploaded a full video on the Baked Flies YouTube channel.
